I boarded the Shangri-La for the first time in 1966 straight out of Great Lakes Radar 'A" School. I asked for a destroyer out of California and naturally I was assigned to a carrier out of Florida, the true Navy way. What A huge ship she was, intimidating at first until you got to know her. I spent my time aboard the Shang in the OI division but was primarily in the ECM (Electronic Counter Measures) side. So many memories of our Med cruises between 66-68 and our jaunt to Guantanamo Bay. The poker games, the short-timers verus the lifer strife, our job in Mayport was running the switchboard too, and last but certainly not least all the 12 on and 12 off, hard work. But all you remember is the fun when you now look back on it. What good friends and what great experiences we had. The folks that don't experience it will never know.

I first reported aboard the Shangri-la on Jan 1, 1966 in Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in dry dock, a new Ensign right out of OCS. I was assigned as an assistant Division Officer to the First Division In about six months I became First Division Officer for the remainder of my time on board which was through the Spring of '68. I was on two Med Cruises, became a qualified OOD. My divison participated in at sea refueling and repenishment and anchoring the mighty Shang. These two and a half years on this wonderful ship changed my life and taught me how to survive in this big world. I met my future wife in Jacksonville, Fl because of the ship's homeport of Mayport. The Shangri-la is a warm and big part of my life. Best of all to my shipmates.

The Shang was my first boat in 1967. Only got to make one Med cruise on and I was in S-6 division. Transfered to Keflavik, Iceland following the 1968 cruise. Funny, the most memorable thing about the Shang though was buying Marlboro cigaretts for .50 a carton. Best boat I ever rode.

My dad, Emmett, was a plankholder on the Shangri-La. He worked as a radio operator during WWII. Luckily, he is still alive and well in Arkansas. I am really glad to see this website, since, unfortunately, you do not see a whole lot about the Shangri-La in the history books.

I just stopped in to say hi! My dad served with pride aboard this ship. My father did not talk much about the war and I did not ask questions. For this I am sorry and I apologize to him for what probably was mistaken as a lack of interest! He passed away in 1967, before I matured mentally enough to express my thanks and say how proud of his service I was and still am ! I can still to this day, not imagine the feeling of being a target in the middle of a big ocean, far from the safety of dry land! Where would we be without the proud men and women of the United States Navy? God Bless you all, and thanks for all you did to help this country become the great nation and the Home of the Free and Land of the Brave ! My sister and I are forever greatful, and now that we have this site to remember even more, and to feel just a little closer to him! Back in those days my father was known as Robert C. Smith WT 2/c . And hello to Mr Robert{?} Means who served with him! Thanks for the site people, it is important to us! Bobby and Linda Smith

When 7 years old my father took us to Long Beach Harbor, where we boarded this most beautiful ship. This had to be around 1946. I remember the beautifu blue-gray Hellcat on the hanger below and on the deck. And of course, was I surprised when I found out I was standing on an elevator. I have been a Navy buff since that day on the Shangra-la

My name is Edmund Marco and it's a pleasure to sign your guest book. I work for an advertising agency in London. Our agency represents direct marketing companies that are involved in the marketing of products as seen on TV in England. Most of the infomercial products come from the U.S. but then again we export our talents as well. My brother has appeared in infomercials in the U.S. advertising various products. I think it's hilarious that English people respond so well to American products while Americans tend to respond well to sales people who have an English accent!

On 8 jan. 1962 the USS Goodrich DDR-831 was plane guarding for the Shangri-la. A plane went into the water that night and the rescud swimmer went into the warer (Harry Foley). Harry couldn't get a line around the pilot so as off-duty swimmer I went into the water and got a line on the pilot. I learned later that he was dead. At the time I was putting a ling around the guy I hadn't noticed he was Dead! Anyway after all the years I was wondering who the pilot was, wher he was from etc. Any information appreciated. Thanks, Jerry Hollingshead.
